Chess 101: Why It’s Interesting and Builds Community
Chess is one of the oldest and most played games in the world. At first, it can look complicated. But once you understand the basics, it becomes simple and fun to play.
What makes chess interesting is that every game is different. You have to think ahead, stay focused, and adapt to what your opponent does. It challenges your mind, but in a calm and enjoyable way. At the same time, it is not only about winning. Chess is also about the process—slowing down, thinking, and being present in the moment.
Easy to Start, Hard to Master
You do not need much to start playing chess. Just a board, a few pieces, and someone to play with. Even if you are a beginner, you can quickly learn and enjoy your first games.
That is what makes chess so accessible. Everyone can join—from complete beginners to experienced players. There is always something new to learn. The more you play, the more patterns you begin to see, and improvement comes naturally.

How Chess Brings People Together
Chess is also a very social game. It creates natural interaction. You sit across from someone, play a game, and often start talking without even trying.
In places like Canggu, where many people arrive on their own, this kind of connection is valuable. You do not need to know anyone beforehand. One game can break the ice and lead to meaningful conversations. It is a simple yet powerful way to feel part of a community.
Chess at PUCO Rooftop
At PUCO Rooftop Coworking Space in Canggu, we love creating moments where people can connect beyond work. Chess is a perfect example of that.
It is simple, relaxed, and brings people together naturally. Whether played seriously or casually, it creates a warm and engaging atmosphere—just like what we experienced during the PUCO Chess Grand Fight.

PUCO Chess Grand Fight: Where Strategy Meets Community ♟️✨
PUCO Rooftop held its first-ever large-scale chess event, the PUCO Chess Grand Fight, on 18 April 2026. Bringing together 16 chess lovers —from masters, coaches, and juniors to amateurs and passionate enthusiasts —the event created a dynamic mix of skill levels and energy.
Throughout the day, everyone blended naturally, creating a friendly and cozy atmosphere where competition and connection went hand in hand.
This marked a special milestone for PUCO. While we usually host smaller weekly chess fights every Wednesday —where winners enjoy a free dinner, this Grand Fight took it to the next level, featuring prizes in coworking and dining vouchers worth up to IDR 1 million.
